I make bookends for craft fairs and by special order (custom designs etc) which are pretty basic 12mm MDF shapes cut out on the scroll saw, hand painted and glued onto pine plinths (see exhibit A)

I have tried various methods of attaching the cut outs to the plinths. I have mainly tried to use a hot glue gun (the one with the glue sticks) but I only get about 3 seconds to position the cut outs before the glue has gone hard.

Is there a better glue to use than hot glue? I need about 10 - 20 seconds to put a blob on, put the glue down and position correctly.

Axminster sell Titebond Instant Wood Glue, it comes in fast and medium setting. I use this a lot and it is very strong, I'm sure it will meet your needs.

I like the giraffe design!

Why don't you leave a tenon on the bottom of the cutouts? I know: "a square peg in a round hole," literally, but that's a few moment's work with some emery cloth, surely, to round it off to approximately circular.

It would make your positioning exact, and be even stronger than a dowel into both sides of the joint. If you want to fit it to both the side and base of the book-end simultaneously (and the book-end is already glued up), drill the holes at 45 deg.

Just a thought.
