Hi guys,

First time here, so hi!

I'm planning a custom case for an old N64 built with wood. Looking for advice on what wood would be suitable.

I need to be able to source the wood in thin sheets so I can bend it around curves (steaming if necessary) as well as slightly thicker sheets (5-6mm) that won't need bending.
Preferably no/few knots and a pale colour. It also needs to be able to withstand temperatures up to 40 deg Celsius without scorching (I should image most woods would be OK apart from very soft woods).

A friend recommended box wood, but looking this up, it seems that it's best suited to turning, so not sure on this one.

Any ideas?

David

Birch ply is ideal 6mm B\Bb will have a face with minimal defects and a pale colour, it can be machined to give crisp edges, ventilation slots etc. For the curved portions I would use 1.5mm aero ply in a 4 layer lamination. Koskinen brand is really nice sold in 1500 mm squares. Any solid or carved 3d parts could be made from solid birch which matches the ply
I don't know how much of an issue fire retardancy is for you. It's the fire retardant in plastic consoles that makes them go brown over time - so manufacturers use it. There are chemicals for painting wood that are fire retardants
