theres a lot of difference between them
the size of the sole for a start .
the way that you hold it .
just look at the pictures , its almost self explanatory :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:
 
Carl what do you want to achieve with the plane?
They do related but different jobs obviously, the midsize ones are used for getting boards rougly to thickness etc, the long ones are used for making boards flat, and the short ones for smoothing - at least thats my approach in a nutshell. Best bet IMHO is to start with a no 5 or 5 1/2 size and then go from there.
