cos i wanted to make a router table top and was going to use Melamine chipboard strengthend with a layer of MDF but changed my mind now
 
I realise you have changed your mind but just in case you change it back, for gluing the panels together in the way you planned you would be better off with contact adhesive. Sikaflex is best for gluing edges it's a bit thick otherwise.
 
If you want a thick top with a melamine face why not simply get an offcut of kitchen worktop from your local "shed" (my local B&Q has them all the time). Then all you have to do is stick the edging strips on. The laminate will be of a much higher quality than the stuff on contiboard and much harder wearing.
