What are the main components for making a cyclone?

I already have a 3hp induction motor from an old Scheppach TKU tablesaw. Could I use it to drive the fan? Where could I buy a fan unit/housing? Do they fit straight onto the motor?
I intend to install it in the woodstore behind my workshop so could I use it without a filter?
And the hard bit, what to use as the main drum of the cyclone. Any ideas?

Should be interesting.

You can do it with a homemade ply box, with any simple arrangement of internal baffle such that the air is forced to take a long path between the "in" and the "out" pipes. It doesn't have to be a fancy steel or plastic cone-shaped thing.

I'll post a photo this evening.

Thanks for the idea Mike, I hadn't considered making a wooden drop box. Are they any good? May well be worth exploring as it won't cost much.
If I can't find a source for a fan/housing thing for my motor I may well buy the Lyndhurst 3hp extractor. Seems to have good reviews on here.
JanneKi, thanks for the 'Bill Pentz' link.
Cheers
