Rather than lose the finials or the boxes I made the other day (owing to the finial lids shrinking) I decided to make new boxes for the finials and new finials for the boxes, unfortunately I had a challenging time of it when two of the new boxes blew up on the lathe, one due to an unforseen fault in the wood, the other due to a careless dig-in, however I have so far managed one of each.
The twenty pence pieces are for scale.

This one is a new box with much better curves than the previous.

This one has a new finial, slightly larger and sort of exaggerated, overlapping as well (Chas's tip)

I also managed to turn out an Oval natural edged bowl in Spalted Sycamore.

Being A newbie here i Think They are All To Be proud of well Done very Impressed =D> =D>

Both look good, still flattenning out though as per Chas' observation in previous mails.

I keep looking and I just can't see the flattening. Is it just in terms of the curve of the box not being shaped enough? To me, flatterning would be that the curve stops in the middle but I can't see this in the examples.

I like the first, not so sure about the second. Finial seems a bit big to me but it's all personal taste :)

Thanks for the comments, That's an excellent page Loz, and I see what you mean, bear in mind though that this is in fact the very same finial Chas commented on, though I am clearer now on what he was referring to and can see the flat spot, that's something I can work on for sure. I too think the finial is a little big on the cherry box, but I am banking on someone thinking it's a bit quirky and liking it, who knows? :)

All three are in shops today so hopefully they will appeal to someone!

Thanks Loz. That's a very useful jpg explanation. Have saved it for future reference.
