Morning all

Sunday night flutter on Ebay left me with this...

I have been after a wider / longer planer for a while and quite fancied some old cast iron too so this ticked all the boxes. Didn't expect to win it with my low bid though!

So now to moving it. Anyone got one? Know if it comes apart? I can collect it in the van but its going to be some weight I reckon.

They have offered to deliver it for a cost which I might take them up on.

Suggestions on the other side have so far consisted of grinding and a blow torch :D :D

Engine crane/lift. Lift - palletise it. Straps through pallet - lift onto van. Reverse procedure your end. :)

lift onto van.

Thats the bit I'm going to struggle with! lol.

Would it not be incredibly top heavy though? Even with the width of the pallet increasing the footprint?

Are there any strapping points on the floor of the van? If so a few of those hooked rachet straps should hold it in place?

I would get them to deliver it. the risk and general faffing about is all on them until it is on the floor at your place. i think that you could soon spend most of a day moving that, with loading, securing, transporting, unloading etc.

good point, yes there are.

Fork lift to get it in perhaps, not much at my end to get it out again. I could construct some long shallow ramps and get plenty of bodies on it.

Dismantling sounds better still. Just not sure if they can be!

I'm certainly leaning that way. Seemed a pretty reasonable delivery charge to be fair. I'll see what they would be expecting at my end to get it off again.

what is it replacing, out of interest Mick? There weren't many standalone planers for sale when I last looked at replacing my 6" axi.

nope- got one of those!

Great machine, if only it was 9 or 10" I wouldn't consider changing it.

Hi the quote you got for delivery is very expensive for Such a small item. If you want to use a pallet courier try national pallets, if it was laid down I dare bet it would be classed as a quarter pallet so only about £50-60. If you were to collect it then Im sure the whole top assembly will come off pretty easy and the motor. The base is fabricated I think. You'll be surprised at what you can move with a few scaffolding poles. That planer will only be maybe 300kg. Good luck with it mark

Roger there are specialist companies that will move whole workshops, I had to use one to disconnect a machine I'd bought 150miles away. They were already on site dealing with other machines, they charged me £60 to undo 3 wires

Many thanks for the input Mark.

I'm going to go and collect and try to dismantle. Another member mentioned it will be BSW nuts and bolts so I'll get hold of some sockets and spanners.

The seller mentioned he had a tractor he could use to help load which got me nervous!! But I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get it loaded.

Keep you posted!!

If that's a wadkin BFT 9", then two men can lift it. You are not supposed to lift it by the tables; but I did with mine and it hasn't damaged it. A quick search on the Internet should show you the correct method. Mine arrived on a normal trailer pulled by a car. I have mine on a mobile base so I can move it around.

It's a great planer - I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

I've got the same planer. I did a restoration job on it and put a few pics up on here if you are interested in looking for it. As already said the base is just sheet steel with a cast foot and is only bolted on. I moved mine in the back of my estate car but a van would have been much easier.

Side note, I nearly had that, but the quoted delivery was wayy to expensive, so I forgot about it for a bit. Went back to find it had gone...

Harry

Thanks for the input guys. I've got the Wadkin manual printed off now and will make sure I take the right sockets and spanners.

Green, your restoration looks great. Is it a two knife cutter block? What is the finish like? The finish from my CT150 3 knife cutter block is excellent, although I'm limited by its size.

Tierney, the mobile base option sounds great. I'll definitely have to do that.
