Hullo all, longtime lurker here. I'll get straight to business.

There's a great deal on a P/T going, it's three phase, I have single phase and would be looking at getting a VFD for it. My uncertainty comes from the fact it has a DC brake wired in. Essentially, do VFDs and DC brakes work together? Or is a rotary converter a better bet?

Thanks!

You could always just remove the dc brake and sell it and then use the vfd for breaking, you never know it might pay for the vfd

You will have to remove the brake as it needs power to release the brake and will stop the machine working with the vfd.
The vfd can be programmed to provide the less than 10sec braking time that the trade regs require.

You normally need to buy a braking resistor to go with the VFD. Check the VFD has braking, not all do.
