Vertical bike storage?

Looking at storing 3 bikes in a shed vertically and wondering what the best kind of brackets are?

For 26" wheel mountain bikes but will be used by an 11 and 13 year old so handy if they can get the bikes on and off by themselves but not essential.

These look easy to get the wheel in and out of but not sure how secure they look

Daft question but is it best to have the back wheel on or off the ground or does it make no difference?

Front wheel is easier to lift up due to positioning of handlebars, I don’t think it matters if the back wheel’s off the ground or not, however, one benefit of it being off is that it creates a foot space.

I bought a rack to hang 4 bikes on. Realised that it didn't save much floor area as they stick out a fair way even if vertical. Also a b0gger to get on and off, with handlebars tangling up - impossible for kids I imagine. Even more difficult if there was anything on the floor under.
Gave up on it! Has spare tyres tubes wheels hanging on it instead.
If I really wanted them off the floor I'd look at hanging them individually on the wall but horizontally - two hooks under the cross bar.

PS just remembered the struggle I had getting my bike unhooked from a train. Had to call for help and delayed departure! It had touring bags on so was a bit heavier than usual.

I use a version of the 2nd example you mentioned, with the back wheel/tyre resting on the ground.

Having the back wheel on the ground for the 11/13 year old may help as the weight of the bicycle is already supported while they manoeuvre the bicycle off the hook?

could you make/do you have space for a suspended rack like the old washing drying racks that had a pulley systems to lift the rack to the ceiling ie

I’ve got about x5 MTB hanging from the front wheel option on ya list , no issues with them , rear wheel just on the floor

I also made a rear wheel holder out of x3 pieces on ply just helps keep the bikes straight

Much prefer storing horizontally. Less space taken up, pedals and bars can sit head to toe.
Some nice fixtures linked to above. I’ve never liked suspending bikes from the rim on a ceiling hook as many do. Controversial view I know but there you are.

Don’t use these, cheap option but not long enough and a real pain to get the bike in and out of.

Well actually I wouldn't bother! The other offerings look a bit better designed - mine is like 4 butchers hooks hanging down from a rail and is really inconvenient. It 'd be good for sides of bacon perhaps. Are there any butchers on the forum?

I used Steadyrack, you can swing the bikes to one side, effectively stacking them against the wall. Not the cheapest by great solution if you don’t have much wall space.

It's actually something I'm doing for my ex, I went for a quick look today and think she is a tad optimistic with how much she will fit in her new shed

Going to have a play around in the next few days to see what works best

We've got similar hooks at work, they seem to work OK. Those are the first out of the two in the OP.

The problems with storing bikes that way is they stick out a long way and kids find it difficult to lift them into position
I use these. They take 2 bikes. I have them mounted above each other so I can store 4 bikes against a wall space. Smaller kids have lower rack. Bigger kids have to lift a bit more

They come as two parts - a wall fixing and the clamp part (you can see this in the photo below) which slots into the wall part - you can buy extra wall plates, e.g. so that you could attach one to an outside wall to hang your bike up whilst washing it.

Well spotted that man! 1999. It's just come out of the garage stack of old bikes to be sold (was SWMBO's). Not in great condition (shocks gone), so probably beyond economic repair. Was going to take it to a boot fair... We use the two carbon road bikes, both built by Cycle Fit in London, and my mountain bike (a Cannondale). My old 531 Claud Butler is going to be made into a fixie., The mass of other old bikes already sold.
