my new restoring project.. i acquired this old plane its all metal apart from the tote ( if you could call it that) is it an infill of sorts? ive looked on the web for a lookalike but with no result. i think its meant to have a norris style lever cap i could be wrong? i will clean this up and replace the wood parts. im not metal smith so cant make the screw or lever cap so wil have to purchase that one but will be fun to do as a whole. any help and opinions would be great.
the plane measures 6' by 1 3/4'

Hello,

Are you just trying to blackmail me out of another Stanley No 2? I hoped I'd have dissuaded you from such basket cases!

Mike.

Is the wooden (blade)bearing surface coplanar with the two vertical metal ribs?

it doesn't look like it!

That's a good point. No they are not coplanar (had to google that word) that wood would have to be replaced of that I certain as its crudley done.
with the rest of it I do t think there would be a knob as is a block plane and ment for one hand use. Could be wrong as I know some have thumb spot and knobs.
Once that is replaced (blade bearing surface) and is fitted to be coplanar it could be useful.
I thinks its and old try and error piece as in some one tryes to make a plane.
What you think??

I don't hold out much hope for this one. It never was a good plane; it was a plane-shaped object, cheaply made from bent steel, to sell to people who did not know what a plane should be like. It's the sort of thing bought by well-meaning children from their pocket money (did I say they were cheap?) and given to their diy-er fathers for birthdays or Xmas. It would originally have had a combined blade wedge and handle made from a bit more bent steel, with a handwheel to tighten it all up. A previous owner has wasted some time carving a chunk of wood to approximate a handle which he has fitted on by drilling a hole through the sole for a woodscrew. It's the sort of thing left behind in the bottom of the box when all the good tools have gone.

If you want a source of suitable parts and a blade, I think they have them from time to time in Poundland. ;-)

But if you like a challenge... go for it!

A challenge, I can hardly say no now as everyone seems to think its junk you could be right can't argue what it looks like right now. Call me a dreamer but I can't just chuck it in the bin with out trying, and I think with a shed load of elbow grease it could make half a shaving. i except the challenge :) i just hope i don't have to eat my own words lol.
I'll search poundland thanks Andy ;)
