I have the above router permanently mounted in a table; always seems to have worked well and it's a good machine for table use.

Halfway through a job, though, it's just died - no warning, I turned it off and then when turning on it refused to spin; just making a clicking noise like https://www.dropbox.com/s/crewmrmkob2oe ... n.mp3?dl=0 when powered on (the power switch remains illuminated as usual).

Only thing I know to check/easily accessible is the brushes, which seem intact with plenty of wear left on them. Any ideas what could cause this?

My thoughts are that the speed control unit has failed, have you tried moving the thumb wheel to full speed or you could bypass the speed control. the other enemy of a router mounted upside down in a table is dust and it may be that the router needs a strip down and clean, Ray Girling has a web page with all relevant info on this job.

Many thanks for these hugely helpful links (and to RG for making them!) - I have stripped the router down and cleaned it, although it was surprisingly clean inside. The problem remained, but I think as you suggest it's the variable speed unit, as confirmed by bypassing it as you suggest - the wiring was fairly simple, but it started with quite a scary racket/kick  so I will likely replace the unit!

Thanks again!

I guess the speed controller does the soft-start control too, so you've lost that by bypassing it.
