Hey All,
Another question regarding my porch (I will actually stop asking these one day ;P)

I was going to frame is out with c16 3x2 cls on 400mm centres. But will this be strong enough (will be using 2 x 4 for the roof and it will be holding a tiled roof, It will be clad in either 18mm pine or maybe ceder if i can get it at the right price) should I use 2x4 would that be better?

the dimensions are 1.4m x 1.7m (give or take a few mm) and the height of the frame around 1.9m max if this makes any difference.

Thoughts appreciated.
Cheers

Mark,

I would think 3x material a little flimsy for a structure such as your are proposing, particularly if you are considering windows or hanging doors. Therefore 4x would be my choice for studs. I would also be looking at least 6x material for the joists. Its surprising how much weight is in a roof.

My thinking is, do it once, so do it right. The difference in cost will be minimal & forgotten when you need to make repairs to a sub standard frame in a couple of years time. Which folllows onto, I would go for cedar rather than pine for durability.

Good luck

David

Hey David,
Thanks, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. the missus had the baby so been a little hectic around here as you may have guessed.

I think its true what you said really and i will be using either 2x4 or 2x5 may as well put the additional expense now rather than retro fitting later and it costing more.

Cheers
Mark
