I bought this vice on the bay a few years ago, it's a well made cast iron clamp-on, jaw width over 7ins, opens 2.5ins or so, not much depth.

Seems to only usefully fit on corner of table/bench as shown - any other position obscures tommy bar or access in use.

Typically, after buying I saw two more, but none since.

No name, has a continental look to me ----- is it just a hobbyist table clamp like that aluminium Stanley of the '80s or so, or does it have a specific function? -- I have an idea which would tie in with it being European continental, eg German, but what do you think?

I think it is a hobbiest table clamp.

I have a bessey equivalent that I bought to hold things on my mft table top. It is not quite as restrictive as your corner version and is actually very handy. I wouldn't plan to use it for anything that requires an iron grip but it saves having to struggle holding things or using awkward clamps in a number of cases, eg edge sanding, dominoing in some situations.

fit it with longer wooden jaws and could pass muster as a saw vice although only for those that aren't very deep...say a gents saw?

here's one I found on the bay...

Stanley used to sell a hobby vice a bit like that years ago IIRC it had jaws at 90 degrees - clamped to a table edge for either horizontal or vertical workpiece
