Got a message from someone ( a trader) off ebay complaining that I had not left any feedback and asking me to leave positive feedback as soon as possible! I sent a text back asking why? I pointed out that I had merely bought something from his ‘shop’, something that was more convenient for me to get off the net rather than traipse into town to get. I had to pay for this convenience, it would have been a lot cheaper in town and I would not have had to wait 10 days to get it either. He was quite miffed and told me so!

Does anyone else feel this stupid system of feedback annoying? Would you buy something from your local shop and then heap praise upon them because they had deigned to sell you something? I invariably avoid people on ebay who more or less demand that you leave feedback. Surely the idea is to praise a trader who goes out of the way to satisfy their customer, not merely praise someone who has allowed you to spend money at their store. It seems like positive feedback is expected because they seem to believe they are doing us a favour. Have you ever tried leaving neutral or negative feedback because someone has mucked you about? Just stand back and watch feathers fly!

I wouldn't leave positive feedback if the seller is demanding it. Different it it was just a gently and pleasant reminder in case I'd forgotten. On the other hand I'm never going to be asked as I always leave feedback promptly. I never leave negative or neutral feedback as I'd sooner sort a problem out with the seller. As a seller I hope will buyers to treat me the same. So far so good - after nearly 3000 transactions as a seller. :)

Yes because part of the trading scenario depends on feedback both from the seller and buyer?
You wouldn't buy, I hope, from somebody with a poor record - would you?

...!

Why did you text it when you could given it to him as feedback about his service / attitude?

The answer is simple don’t use traders, that only trade on Ebay, better still don’t use Ebay at all.

Take care.

If someone has something I want but has a less than a perfect record I take the time to read the negatives. Sometimes, reading between the lines, it's not quite what it may seem by just looking at the numbers. Reading some of the comments left by disgruntled buyers can be revealing. Not of the sellers but of the buyers.

I agree to an extent. If the seller is a trader and you can find their business website usually it's cheaper to buy the item there. Simple, they aren't having to pay eBay's fees.

But as to not using eBay at all, well I'd be lost as some rare items can't be found elsewhere.

I have had bad feedback because a gortex army jacket never had gortex written on it, if it was on there it would have been a fake, and another for selling an empty gas bottle because there was not much gas in it.

When something arrives on time i say thanks then know it has arrived. If arrives late and it’s because they used my hermes they still get a thanks if it’s two weeks late because they never had it in stock they get bad feedback. If they have gone out of their way to rip me off i give them bad feedback before I report them, they will then often offer to sort out the problem if I remove the feedback. I buy and sell on eBay every week and get things I could never get elsewhere or it would cost too much.

I think the key is to realise that the feedback is not a means of praising or thanking the vendor, it's a means of recording how the transaction went, as a guide to potential customers. By not leaving any feedback, good or bad, you are limiting the information available to them to help them decide weather to use the seller.
To paraphrase RogerP, anybody with any sense will check a seller's feedback before buying from them.

Demanding feedback is bad enough but demanding positive feedback is definitely wrong; I'm quick to praise when earned but I'll be buggered if I'd do it because I was told to. If you're bloody minded them so am I lol

If I sell something, and the buyer does not leave feedback after a couple of weeks, I simply email the buyer and ask if everything was ok, as I'd like to sort it out if there was a problem. Almost invariably, feedback is promptly left. If feedback isn't left, then no harm is done.

I bought a gas bottle from some clown in the West Country a while back, and there was hardly any gas in it. Left him a well deserved NEG!
