i have just been reminded to set my stroke length to the longest setting, how would i know what setting i already have..

Hi Steve, just checked the manual and apparently it should have been set to the long stroke at the factory.
If you remove the safety shield on the side of the saw you can check this.
Fasten the bearing into the hole nearest the centre of the flywheel for the shorter stroke and the hole nearest the outside of the flywheel for the longer stroke.
 
As Phil says, mine was set at long stroke.
FWIW I have never felt the need to change it even when cutting metal, I imagine that the short stroke might be useful if one does not have variable speed. :)
