Stanley number 78 depth stop.

A friend is looking for a depth stop for his Hellstedts no. 78 rebate plane. It is a close copy of it's Stanley namesake so a Stanley depth stop would fit if he could find one. I would have use for a Stanley depth stop screw so we could split a depth stop with screw between us. Any clues for where to buy one?

Here in Finland nobody sells such parts.

Buy a really bad knackered cheap 78 from fleabay and recycle the parts you need. You'll get a couple of "free" blades too!

But the knackered ones are always missing the depth stop and the fence!
Normally the answer to questions like this is www.stanleytoolparts.com who do ship worldwide, but although they list the fence, and the screw to hold the depth stop, they don't offer the depth stop itself. Maybe with the right fixing screw a bit of scrap steel could be filed to shape.

They do list the depth stop and screw in the "Number 78 lever & depth gauge kit" ($US10). Unfortunately that kit is "Currently out of stock", and in my limited experience, once they go out of stock they seldom get re-stocked.

Sorry that doesn't help much...

Maybe a broken one (the nose is often broken off) with the depth gauge, off the bay, they show up occasionally. Though as Andy says, they're unusual with both fence and depth stop - and usually command a higher price accordingly.

You see a lot of 78s on the bay though, so sooner our later some rust ridden sole scratched unboxed piece of junk will surface under the antiques section ;-)
