Some more Yew.

Sorting through my last few bits of Yew and managed to get these two bowls out and some Apples,all complete with splits but with some lovely figure and colours..
All pieces finished with sanding sealer and Microcrystaline wax.

200mm x 60mm.

Those bowls are really gorgeous.
Apples - well shaped and all that but wouldn't want to eat one. Some look well past their sell by date

What a fantastic bit of timber you made that bowl from! Did it justice though. I like the apples, though I prefer an angled stem rather than upright, I think it looks more natural.

I wish Chas,just using up some off cuts that i've kept all this time.

ROB-I used Walnut on these and my last batch but have used Laburnum and even Zebrano in the past,so any dark brown wood thats suitable.

After Richard Findley gave some advice last week when many of us fruit noobies were lamenting our inability to get apples right, I bought some ebony from a Lincoln based supplier. They were reject guitar fingerboards. Work out very nicely for stems. Then having turned around 15 or so in a batch I noticed some were piano keyboard black while others had brown streaks. Some nice variation. At that point, it occurred to me that any darkish wood would do. So I understand your choices now. I've even got some very dark oak heartwood that wood be OK. From now on I'll keep even small offcuts of anything dark in the "future stems bin".

When I started turning, a bowl of wooden fruit was on my bucket list I've no idea why I find them fascinating but I do. Your yew apples are quite stunning and very uniform in shape.

It looks excellent all the grain and colours - love the pictures some of you post shows what you do with pieces of wood I'd have put on the wood burner pile (no offence intended), the very least I'd have done is to try and fill in the cracks. Keep the picture coming it inspires some - and yes sicken some of us, we will have to try harder.

I did try another two pieces of Yew that i had similar to those shown,but as soon as i started turning the inside out they didn't sound right so checked them and the splits went too deep and just didn't sound safe to work on so discarded them,best to be safe than sorry :wink:
