How long do good quality diamond stones last, let's say in comparison to other media?
Oil/Arkansas I would think last at least a lifetime or two. My 8,000G waterstone (in daily professional use), around 15 to 20 years. Perhaps less if I flattened it as regular as some.

My 400 has a disapointingly short life. Just a few years and its very thin allready. The 8000 has lost quite a bit of thickness but is nowhere near completion after 8 years. The 1000 is soldiering on fine too but I have it shorter.

My first diamond plate is really letting me down after something like 6 years. I used it mostly for stone flattening but also for steel. It's coarse/xoarse, but pretty slow nowadays.

I think it is the coarse ones that go first.

I've had my dmt fine stone (red) for twenty years, can't say in comparison to water stones as I've never felt the need to get them. I have some oil stones that still work, but I just prefer the dmt stone, no reason other than personal choice.

Must have had my DMT stones (blue, red and green) about 20 years and they are still working well. I use them with oil. Don't use any other stones.

Cheers

I found I can't beat a DMT for face-flattening. After that it's just two water-stones for me. When I need to grind I use a Tormek. Sometimes I use Paul Sellers's hand honing, occasionally I use a guide. Depends on whether or not the arthritis is playing up in my hands. Either way seems to produce exceedingly sharp edges.

Has anyone used their extra extra fine stone (the 3 microne one)?
