I turned a piece of Sapelle (bought blank about 8 inches) for the first time yesterday.

Here is the chunky bowl which resulted.
I may have gone a little wild with the depth of the chuck recess due to the previous piece coming off and whizzing past my ear!

I was amazed how hard it was on the chisels.
The scrapers managed nearly one pass before needing resharpening.
Is it usually this tough?

And I thought Oak was abrasive.

Would not consider Sapele as being particularly abrasive, could be your specimen was from a plantation 'windbreak' where it has picked up windborn sand.

No obvious tool or sanding marks on the piece, so job done. Shape and form are personal things, good finish is universal to all work.

that looks to be the same timber i had problems with earlier in the year ( I eventually resorted to using scrapers and my kel tool but it took nearly three hours)

I thought mine was sapelle too but the prognosis on here was that it wasnt sappelle at all

I did wonder whether it was teak or something similar which had been mis-labeled...?

beautiful ,

Can i ask what the finish is ? - I like that nice subtle sheen on bowls.

Nice looking piece V :D
Looks to be well finished, but a little heavy looking for my liking.
It does look like Sapele, which can be brittle when dried out.

Very nice

I like a bit of substance :p

Not the type of bowls that blow off a self in a draught :p

And you get to keep some wood rather than convert it to floor shavings

Woo Hoo

Like the rim as well :p

Loved the top decoration and interior, would have preferred more shape with the sides and perhaps a thinner base rim.
Surprised at it being abrasive, Sapele is not regarded to be hard on tools.
Good job.

That was Liberon lathe polish followed by Coloron clear beeswax polish.

Usually I just use sanding sealer and wax but I was having trouble getting the finish right and the Liberon really worked for this one.

Thank you!

I must admit that I like my bowls thick, especially the exotics.
As I'm not selling them I can do them as I like :)
