Hi guys!

I've not been around much due to a spell of ill health, but I finally got back out in the workshop the other day and had a muck about with my Robert Sorby RS200KT that I got second hand off a kindly member here. It's actually a pretty good tool, I was very happy with it.

However, for some of the stuff that I do, I'd like to use the teardrop cutter but unfortunately the member I bought it from didn't have that one any more, and I was curious if anyone knew where I could buy a replacement. There's been some talk of compatible cutters and scrapers for the likes of EasyTools gear etc, and I wondered if anyone might know of an equivalent cutter that might fit the RS200KT, as £15 for a pretty small shaped chunk of HSS seems a little excessive.

Any ideas? I may be being a bit of a skinflint, but I'd like to keep using this and the other replacable cutter tools that I have, and don't fancy paying the price of a new crown scraper every time I replace a tip so I've been looking for the compatible replacements for all of them.

If a mod moves this for me, then, thanks very much fellas!

You'd probably be better off asking in the turning forum, but from my experience the best way to get these type of cutters cheaply is to get hold of some used HSS planer blades and make your own.
That way you can make them any shape you want and have cutters for one-off jobs. Drilling the hole in them is difficult without specialist bits (I think I used tile drill bits once) so I now cut slots instead with an angle grinder. The advantage of this is that they're much quicker to make and swapping cutters is a lot faster as you just need to loosen the retaining screw.

Hi

I don't know of anywhere selling similarly sized HSS tips - I'd go with duncanh's suggestion to grind your own from ex planer blades, (got to be cheaper than HSS stock).

Spindle moulder blades would probably be suitable and involve less grinding, you may even be able to use the existing hole(s), (may need to be bushed), to secure them.

This was a mistake actually, I intended to post this in the turning forum, but it was nearly half past two just after a bout of illness, so I'm entitled to minor screw ups :)

Am I better copying the same post there, or asking a Mod to move the post?

I don't really have decent grinding gear, as my main sharpener is a work sharp 3000, so it's not really suitable for heavy shaping, especially of decent HSS.
Thanks.

I have a teardrop on my tool and have been using it for a few years now, I know £15 seems expensive but as long as it is not sharpened aggressively then it does not work out that dear. All I use is a diamond card and give it a rub now and then.
I also looked at planer blades after asking a similar question still have not tried one yet

Thanks, all of you. Despite my clumsiness :)

Dalboy, that's reassuring. I had an image in my head of having to replace the thing every few months due to it's size, shape and being HSS. If it's going to last a while then I guess the £15 odds isn't quite such a silly amount.

If I was going to make my own, I think I might look into buying the small strips of HSS that you can get imported from china on Ebay, as it'd require less cutting than trimming it out of a blade, and there's a real lack of second hand tool stores and decent car boot sales etc up here as far as I know.

Thanks for the link also Robbo, that's the cheapest I've seen the cutter for, so depending on what they charge for postage, I may well be ordering one this evening :)

I forgot to say - once you have it the shape you want don't sharpen it on the grinder as you would with normal tools - hone it instead as it'll last much longer. I use a diamond stone and tend to hone the front face, sometimes honing the top face (which is why it's useful to use a slot rather than a hole as the cuter can be removed for honing much faster)

Hi

If you're considering importing from the Far East have a look here

I've used them and am very happy with the quality, (the items are as supplied by several UK model engineering wholesalers), and service. Use the currency converter at the bottom of the page to show prices in sterling.

Thanks for that Eric. I noticed that as I went through ordering. I'm a suspicious sort after 20 odd years in varied businesses, and I usually run a trial order thru any company before I decide on a real order, and found that the ToolPost is not as cheap as it first appeared, in fact the cost for the part was pretty much even from most different shops, within a quid or two when postage was figured in.

For the sake of 50p odds difference, I've ordered from one of my favourite small turning shops, to support the company I've enjoyed using for a year or two now.

Thanks to everyone for the help on it all.

Nic.
