I bought the plan to build one around a Draper 45368 several months ago but haven't got round to it yet, based on what you can potentially do with one of these I'm looking forward to doing so.

I think any that can be removed from it's plunge base will work in such a lift. Something like the Bosch GKF600. Which is what Mattias uses in his panto

Marcros,

The Draper Expert has a detachable motor, similar to the one you posted, around £150

Alan,

does the plan give you any indication of the time it would take to build it? It does look useful...

Mark,

There is no timescale as such but I'd say you set your own pace with it - I watched the videos a few times and thought it was a one weekend job but the more I watched it and reviewed the plans the more I thought it'll take as long as was needed to ensure 100% build accuracy. If you've seen the preview of what you get with the plans it is well worth the money. Good luck if you do go for it.

I had a T4 trend the other week and the motor came off very simply and just has a clamp set up when fixed to the plunge mechanism. Its small and if its not doing any substantial duties would work as well. (the plunge mechanism on the trend t4 did not meet my standards btw. )

Is that the 11 minute or so youtube video. If so, I have seen that.

Would this do?

I'm actually trying to make my mind up, myself, over which to buy of these, between the Makita and the Dewalt as a general use router that's not too heavy (I have bad wrists) for use in mainly small to medium projects.

If anyone has an opinion, I'd be glad to hear it, but on all three of these, the motor comes out separately and easily, just like the one you linked originally.

Nic.

My apologies, you're right Peter, I just checked and the one linked by the OP is a 2.25HP 1/2inch collet machine, whereas the ones I've been looking at are 1/4 inch I think, and certainly not such powerful motors.

I'm still tempted by one myself, and I suspect I'll go with the DeWalt purely for build quality, but they may not be the right tool for the job that Marcros is considering, despite looking very similar.

Nic.

do they do them in larger collet sizes though? They look rather pricey for the large motors (for what i want it to do, and compared to a standard router)

Sorry but

The words DeWalt and build quality just don't marry well these days. Not unless you use derogatory words that is......

OK, I'm a bit confused by that... I admit I don't know a lot about brands, and I've had absolutely nothing to do with the very top ones like Festool etc, but then I will never be able to afford to. I've had a few hands-on trials of various brands tho, and out of all the locally available brands, DeWalt seemed one of the best made, solid and quality-feeling, at least in the short time I've handled any. Was I mislead by clever presentation? (I do happen to be partial to yellow, so it's possible...)

Is this just a spot of brand bashing? Or should I avoid DeWalt? I don't want to Hijack Macros's thread, but I'm trying to find a decent router too, and I had pretty much decided on the DeWalt from the 3 I posted links to earlier, I don't need massive heavy duty, just reliable, accurate and not too heavy.
