Hi, I've just turned a small box from spalted ash but a small area is actually rotten. Is there a way of stabilising the soft rotten part?

Yep, that. ^^^ but it'll make eye-watering fumes when you sand it, so PPE. ;-)

If you often turn wood like this, try the Drechslen wood hardener from the Toolpost. I like the fact that it actually works and their is little or no smell when sanding.

Or you could buy some wood hardener from the local hardware shop. The sort used for patching up wooden window frames etc.

Obviously all woods rot eventually but birch seems to be the worst for turning to pith in the blink of an eye. Thanks for the advice, I'll do some googling now.
