The threaded core section is 7.5mm a book i have says 70-90% depending on the wood.

The screws are for attaching a bench top to legs which i doweled a section straight on top of. The top is douglas fir the leg stretcher..thing is larch. I plan to oversize the pilot holes at the back but not the front of the bench.

I think the doglas fir is probably similar to cherry, it is tight grained american type. So 80% sounds right, the core is 7.5 and 80% of that is 6mm. Towards the head the core expands quite a bit so i guess i migjt have to make a seperate pilot hole for this section too?

Does this sound right? Ive not used coach screws before and dont want to mess the bench up..

Thanks
