I turned a small oak bowl fresh from a tree i was given..just when i was learning

threw it on the side , but the person who gave me the tree took it home
no worries it will split in a few days...nope

they returned it to me 9 months later...can i finish it was the question

the tenon may just grip in my jaws to do the inside , and there is only about 15mm wall thickness left

how could i re-mount to do the outside please?

Steve

If I were you I would first of all reverse mount it to clean up the existing tenon to make it as sound as possible to grip.
Use something like this to trap the reversed bowl against the chuck with a revolving tailstock fitted with a pressure pad to stop point digging into base.

Then when you have got a secure spigot for holding you can finish both inside and out except for the base.

Then re-reverse mount and clean up as much of the base as possible, finishing any small central area off the lathe or with a rotary sanding disk. held in the lathe.

Chas has got it well covered as usual Steve :)

Just to add, when turning with just tailstock pressure be sure to keep the speed down and take light cuts with a freshly sharpened gouge, so as not to exert too much sideways pressure on the workpiece, but other than that it's quicker and easier to do than it is to describe !

Cheers, Paul

I have two wood chuck domed supports of differing sizes, they have been fitted with thick pads of Cork on the front face since the above image was taken, simplifies looking for anti scuff packing when needed for use.

It helps for future reverse mounting if you remember to mark the centre of your original recess or spigot when first turned, either skew point or just a pencil dot and some small circles, aids piece alignment using tailstock reference.
