As per title just a quick question to the more knowledgable guys on stair making..

Im starting a stair for some relatives old cottage next week which is basically a straight set with a landing 3/4 steps from bottom with a 90degree return.

What im wondering is when marking out my stringers and dividing up the rises if i got for example 7.653" on the calculator how do i then divide that into 7 inches/eighths/sixteenths, etc ?

There must be a formula or somthing ?? Any help is much appreciated !

0.5 =1/2
0.25 = 1/4
0.125 = 1/8
0.0625 =1/16
therefore 0.653 = 0.5+0.125 =0.625 =5/8 near as makes no difference
HTH
all the best
rob

Thanks for the help, rob - are they just commonly known conversions or is there a formula you use ?

crispy - i do use metric but it just got me wondering how they do it as all the stair-building books i have are american or old english so use imperial !

Either get a better calculator or work in mm.
7.653"= 194.3862mm which then round up to 194.4mm to set your dividers.
Or use the calculator and do it by dead reckoning and measure off 194.3862mm, x2, x3, ...number of risers. This way you won't get an accumulated error even though the actual marks may be rounded off to nearest 0.5mm.

Thanks for the replies, and the links. just to clarify i will be using metric and always do the question was more of a 'how did they do it ?' one. I suppose being quite young i was never taught anything in imperial in school/college etc !

AAAHHH that makes more sense lol
I was just starting to get a bit concerned that you were biting off more than you could chew lol
So glad I was wrong :D

Realised I haven't followed this thread up. There were a few hick-ups to work around but the ttaircase went together nicely in the end. I fitted an oak balustrade and the treads/risers have been carpeted since.

A couple of these..
