I have just bought a second hand Record 75RPM mortise press. It came with a set of chisels too.
What is confusing me is that the auger drill bit mounts in the chuck just fine, but the chisel is fairly loose in the holder when I slide it into the mount.
This means that when I tighten it, it goes out of true when the clamping bolt pushes on it. The auger bit then rubs against the square chisel and I am sure it is not working efficiently.
I notice a hole cutter saw blade has already been placed in the clamp to try to reduce the diameter (but not enough).
Is this a case of metric / imperial mismatch?
Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks
Nick

I suspect you are missing a sleeve which reduces the diameter to 3/4" (or whatever - I can't remember off hand) I know mine (not a Record) came with a sleeve so I could use a smaller diameter chisel if I wished. Someone has tried to take up the gap on yours with the hole saw cutter.

Ah, thanks that makes sense. I see that Axminster can supply an adapter. Pity about the postage, makes it quite expensive. But I can't see one anywhere else.

The Axminster AW16BM-series with the sliding two-axis vice for the stock is very similar to the small Record one. In fact the previous Axy version (wot i hav) was very, very similar :)

Thus I would be amazed if the adapter didn't fit. While you're at it, have a look at the drill chuck adapter and riser block. I find both very handy, especially as my pillar drill is two flights of stairs up away from my workbench. Using the morticer as a drill isnt ideal, but it often saves a lot of time.

E.

EDIT: just googled: it's the Record BM16 mine is "similar" to, not the RPM75 (Google thought I wanted 78RPM gramophone records!). Even so, measure the hole and ask Axminster what sleeves/adaptors they keep. They're usually very helpful. It should be a standard size.

Obviously, you wouldn't need the riser block, nor the drill adapter
