Hey, I haven't been on here for quite a while, I've been busy with various projects and trying my hardest to make a bit of money out of them.

In my search for woodworking fortune, my brother sent me a link to a website selling 'pirolettes', these are the side-on profile of your face turned into a block of wood. They're selling on the website he showed me for $150 and that got me thinking, surely having someone send you a photo of their side-on profile so you can cut it out and then turning the said profile into a block of wood can't be that difficult?

If it's not then why are they charging that much for it? Will they have an expensive CNC machine to do the turning to save time or is there something I'm missing?

I'm going to give them a go anyway but I was just wondering if anyone's ever tried their hand at them before?

Thanks

Anthony

That's exactly what I thought the process would be like, but considering they're so expensive and only turned from (what I can see) glued together chunks of Walnut, Cherry and Padauk I thought there must be something extra there. I guess I'm just expecting something harder than it most probably is in reality lol

Very! thats how hard they can be. i thought copying an eggcup was tricky enough so i dont know i thought this would be any easier.
it wasnt, and of course with faces the slightest difference means it looks like someone else

admittedly this was just a quick go and my template was too big or timber wasnt big enough to get the forehead and chin in
but if you want a challenge for next year mr blister, look no further

Hi Nev

I think you should of made the nose shape go into the wood, rather than out

Its the shadow that gives the effect.
