Just made this fireplace. The wood was from a half pallet of pippy oak I got for 60 quid! bargain eh? Still got masses of the stuff left.

Yes machined them using a router and the chiseled out the dentils.

Mind you would still need to clean up the corners , is that how you did it ?

Like this. Just an ordinary oak but with lots of burls on it, so you get the groups of little knots.

I actually got it from my uncle, who took the other half.

It was sitting outside a house, left over from a renovation I think. It was really twisted and warped. But after an hour or two with the jointer and thicknesser it came up beautiful.
