I see that these are on offer at Axi at the moment, £11 for 30.

I bought some of these from ebay late last year, and they are really useful things- well worth investing in.

I bought a cheap little turntable from ebay too- designed for cake decorating I think, and this is useful for applying finish to boxes and small components, when used with the pyramids. A piece of board on top allows it to be used for slightly larger bits, although it is limited by its size/stability and the weight that it can take. It was only about £3 though!
 
An improvised substitute for painter's pyramids can be made by knocking panel pins into small blocks of wood, and leaving about 1/2" standing proud. Best used in threes, since it's almost impossible to get four of exactly equal height. Not as good as the real thing, but can be handy as an emergency wangle if proper pyramids are not to hand.
