Hi.
I am new to the forum.
I have just purchased a job lot of tools on e bay, in there are 2 oilstones in carborundum boxes, although not a good fit to the box.
The stones are buff coloured, as an apprentice some 50 odd years ago I have no recollection of Buff Carborundum I think it was always blue/grey and India Terra Cotta
Anyone any info on this?
Thanks
Fred Sutton

I've got some buff coloured man made stones. Finer and harder than the red india of the usual combination and a useful addition. No idea what they are, they were 'found'.

Thanks for that.
Was wondering if as a long shot they may be Washita, but I think your description of man made fits.
Regards
Fred

Better to make a thousand mistakes than one mistake a thousand times.

Carbonundrum (aka silicon carbide) is IIRC quite a common abrasive for metalworking tasks and can be sintered into a shape, eliminating the need for a soft binder, giving an increased working life.
