Hello everyone, Paul here I am new to the world of woodturning. Recently I have had less hours of work and having always liked the idea I madly decided to jump in with two feet and bought a new Record Cl3 lathe. I spent most of the evening assembling the lathe and figuring out what every component does. I still haven't even switched the machine on! My first question (which I am sure I will have many of over the next while) I was wondering what type of oil people could recommend for the initial oiling and regular maintenance of this machine.

Thank you in advance!
Paul.

Hi.
I have a record lathe at present and a coronet lathe for 30 years and I use what ever oil I have laying around the workshop. Hasn't done either of them any harm, and as Nev says you only need a few drops for each session.

Andrew.

How/where does one apply oil? I didn't even know it needed doing  thought it was all this modern new-fangled "sealed for life" stuff.

On the CL range of Record power on top of the headstock.

Thanks Nev, I'll have a look at my lathe and see if there is a similar nipple.
Thanks guys, you may have, long term, saved me a lot of grief there!

I think the smaller Record DML (?) and the CL1 have sealed bearings ?

It's the CL2 CL3 and CL4 models (that look otherwise pretty similar) that have the phospor bronze taper bearing with oil feed nipple that need oil added during use.......

Cheers, Paul

i Use The Cl3 i use hypoid gear oil when i was At yandles first time i purchased a Cl4 They said I quote ant Hypoid gear Oil is ok Thicker The better bit of a strange Food for thought but thats what i been using and i have no problems
Regards
Bill

Thanks for all the help guys. After reading the manual (properly) it seems if the Record Power Spindle oil isn't available they recommend 30w oil. Will have a look for it tomorrow so. It really is a shame they don't supply it with the lathe since the recommend you shouldn't even start the machine without first using it. I just ordered the Keith Rowley book aswel. Cant wait to start butchering some wood! (hammer)

Thanks form me too guys. Looks like my lathe (I say "my" lathe, but it is actually borrowed from my brother), has sealed bearings after all, so no need for oil. Could have been a catastrophe waiting to happen though as I hadn't even considered that it might need lubricating!
