I'm completely new to this and I've just bought my first scroll saw, a SIP 01928. Perhaps not the best saw, but I'm getting the hang of it!
Can anyone point me in the direction of designs for complete beginners?

Hi,

Welcome to the world of scrolling :)

Have a look here for lots of starting out advice and patterns: http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.co.uk/

Searching on the Internet for pictures and add "line art" after say like "dog line art" will reveal many pictures that you can print and cut.

There are many many more experienced scrollers on here than me that can advise far better :)

Look into getting dome decent blades and make sure you bolt the saw down :)

Look forward to seeing some of your first cuts :)

Cheers,

Jon.

There are lots of pattern books available some with very simple designs but if you are just learning why not just look for simple line drawings on the net and use these or find a child's colouring book to practice cutting out basic shapes.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0806 ... oks&sr=1-1 has lot's of simple designs and can be bought second hand from about £1.55 plus P&P.

You could also practice by printing out some letters and cutting them out. IMHO letters are good practice as they are more difficult to cut out neatly, if you are cutting a flower and it goes off line you can 'adjust' the flower shape and no one will ever know but a letter must look right!

Have you got a copy of Coreldraw or similar, I use Coreldraw to make my own patterns or to alter existing ones.

As an example this is one I made using Coreldraw using an existing pattern and replacing the animal with a German Shepherd dog, I make these for the local GSD charity to sell. (FOC of course)

Hello and welcome.

Nice to see another member from Scotland to join the existing 'North of the Border' team ;-)

My advice would be to start with some simple projects and gain in confidence, then you can work up to more complex projects. I started with basic animal shape pull-along toys cut from 3/4" pine.

+1 for the fabulous Steve Good web site. They are fairly easy to cut and all totally free. Just download the PDF, print it out and stick it to some wood/plywood and start cutting.

Take your time, don't rush and enjoy what you are doing.

Barry
