Not 100% what this is but it is about 12" long with a wired up festoon bulb and some sort of air/vacuum connection which I assume is supposed to operate the pointer.
Cheers

Reminds me of my first car (Ford Pop) which also had vacuum operated wipers. Pressure was from the inlet manifold so if you pressed the throttle it'd rise and the wipers would slow down to almost zero, then lift your foot off and there'd be a frenzy of fast wiping.

Thanks folks and yes the idea of it being some sort of trafficator was where I was at but after going through loads of pictures on the net I had no joy in a positive identity.
Other options that have been mooted are along the lines of warning indicators from the inside of old lorries and buses for telling the driver that air or vacuum pressure is lost.

that is a very nice vintage trafficator

let me know if you put it on eBay
So Mr Wizard, sounds like you might have a good idea what it's off.....
Alas I doubt I'll sell it as it is just so unusual and that's what I like to have on show for the public when exhibiting at vintage shows
Another avenue of thought to consider is that within the copious amounts of tools that came from this auction was a large amount of ministry stamped tooling and there were 2 "ENGINE BLOWER OILER" http://www.thevintagetoolco.com/index.p ... cts_id=231 which may have been for the Bristol Mercury Aero engine  . So is it something off an old plane?

Cheers

Could that be Bristol Cars instead?

I'm way out of my depth, per usual, but the two companies were connected - the car company started immediately post-WWII through an alliance between Fraser Nash and the Bristol Aeroplane Co. It's possibly a bit late for your piece, but a trafficator does look the most likely, by far.

Everyone would have been using Ministry-stamped tools back then, I'd guess. If not actual surplus then at least war finish.
