Martin,

You now have 3 locks in the middle of the door, you would be better off ditching the bolt and padlock as that would last about 2 seconds with a scrote. You would be better off with a deadlock top and bottom of the door.

hi paul

as i said that was the first of two hasp and staple locks , the second one still to be fitted . When i get the steel sheeting to fit over the door the bolt and padlock plus the yale lock will be redundant and removed , this then leaving externally the two new hasp and staples ,then internally fitted into the length of the edge to the door , I'm going to fit a five locking point lock with handles from an old double glassed front door this then giving me seven locking point down the entire length of the door , That will complete STAGE 2. hc

Hi, HC

What if they knockout the pins from your hinges? have you got hinge bolts?

Pete

hi

not possible , when i built the workshop and got round to hanging the door i used three 4 " butt hinges which i drilled the existing screw hole larger and fitted 75mm * 12 steel screws and let the hinge in flush with the edge of the frame so when the metal sheeting is fitted they will be covered, plus the frame will also be covered separately as well leaving about a 1.5mm cap with the hinges behind the metal sheeting all sheeting door and frame will be coach bolted in position. hc

Watched 'Death Wish 3' 'tother night. How about a sprung board that knocks the teeth out of anyone stepping through the doorway?

Roy.

What would I find if I peeled off some of the featheredge? Or lifted the roof? With all those substantial looking locks there must be something good inside worth the effort of getting to...

hi

you would find behind the weather boards battens then tyvek paper then 3/8 marine ply then 4 " studs which still has to be be filled with 100 mm foam sheeting but that is expensive so has to waite a while already in place on the inner walls 18mm mdf , the roof has three layers of fiber glass sheeting each layer bonded on with epoxy resin hard and nails which is bonded to 18mm shuttering ply which is screwed down . hc

This has been mentioned before, but what is one supposed to do? I understand that if the scum see's a number of locks or other security devices it is obvious that there is something worth protecting inside. But if you put minimal protection on and some ar$ewipe who used to be a friend tells the wrong person what you have, then you have made it easier for them to get in.
There is also the option of hiding the main protection inside, but surely you still have to install some sort of security outside to stop them having a pop at things you have installed within?

Most people say that if a thief really wants to get in bad enough he will find a way, and even though this maybe correct, the whole idea is to slow them down long enough so they will be seen, or have them make so much noise someone will have a look at what all the racket is.

We all know that Johnny Scumbag will steer clear of anywhere that looks like he may break a sweat, or make to much noise. So IMHO a big red box/alarm with a strobe light and a camera placed in a position for all to see is a must, because it will make most thieves go onto a easier target.

Cheers

Mike

cheers mike my sentiment entirely I couldn't have put that better .

don't forget guys this still only stage 1 . hc

After a break in on my shed I taped a simple message to the door:

'Alarm and camera fitted - see you in court'

Never had any bother since

You've obviously got a better class of sh*ts locally King, they can read!

Roy.

The lock just looks like a beacon - that's all. I guess it depends on how easy it is to see in passing (i.e. without someone having to enter your property but just observe in passing). A mortice lock (or two+) would be more discreet and probably less straightforward to twist off with a pry bar?

hi matt

like a beacon, twist of with a prise bar , its bolted on with 60mm 1/2 coach bolts on the door and 100mm 1/2 coach bolts through the frame I don't think so , no one cane see the door to the workshop from any direction its well concealed , they only get to see the hasp and staple locks if they enter the property through others gardens . Actually those pics are not really doing justice to the locks , I'll replace the pics with some better one's tomorrow . hc

With all of that metalwork on the door, you could always connect it to your wiring and give them a real 'buzzzzzz' next time they try to break in..? ?

Perhaps you could invest in one of those remote control plug switches or have a switch in your house so that you can safely enter. A nice big 'Danger of Death' electricity sign might make them think twice

Failing that, you might be able to ask the local plod to see one of their officers who deals with crime reduction and security measures........you might have to wait a while..... These specialist officers used to be in Suffolk and I thought other forces too. Sorry, silly idea, might be a long shot tho'?

hi SPinonit

With all of that metalwork on the door

next time they try to break in..? ?

I haven't had a breakin but it is a constant worry that one day it will be attempted , police officer security people there was a post on here not to long ago from such a person and his suggestion were very good and got me to thinking it time i really should do something , it taken me a life times working to gather my tools I would kinda like to keep them not let some scrote walk off with them . hc

I'm for keeping a pet hippo....

They kill more humans in Africa than lions....but I would keep a lion in the plane cupboard just for backup!!

:D

Seriously though...I fitted a wireless alarm system which I got for a fiver at a bootfair and it worked BRILLIANTLY the other day.

Her indoors went in to get me some things and accidently locked the cat in.

Five minutes later....there was a huge siren, blue lights and when she opened the workshop door....a jet propelled moggie...frightened the living dung out of the poor creature!

A few of us were talking about this at the Kent Bashe.....one thing that some of us had and I have had for ages is one of those really cheap personal alarms...the ones that have a pull out pin.

Screw it to the wall...take the string bit and hook it over the handle or a screw inside and then leave enough slack to disarm it.

I have made myself jump more times than I can imagine. If it makes you jump that much in the daylight when you know it is there...I think it would make most chancer scrotes run away in the dark!
