Hi
Yes you can play a musical saw. In fact I run workshops around the country on it. It is an orchestral instrument as such sometimes described as a flexitone, but some of the more modern composers have included it in their scores. A few well known films have included the saw :
“Swing Your Lady” with Ronald Reagan and Humphrey Bogart (1938),
“Give a little whistle” from Pinocchio (1940)
“My Brother Talks to Horses” (1947),
“Curtain Call at Cactus Creek” (1950),
“Hobson’s Choice” (1954),
“A Fine Madness” (1966),
“Cabaret” with Liza Minelli (1972),
“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975)
“Delicatessen” (1991).
There will be a documentary coming out soon on the BBC called " American B Side" and I'm playing the main theme on the saw. I hope this has not bored you all. If you want to hear it why not visit my site (www playthesaw co uk)
All the best
Charles
