A lad was struggling with his homework which required him to explain the differences. He turned to his dad for help.
His father thought briefly then said:
"Okay, son - I'll explain irritating."
He picked up the phone book, selected a number at random and called it. When someone answered dad said:
"Hi there! I'd like to leave a message for Jim, please. Can you tell him that tomorrow's meeting is now at the old hall."
The voice at the other end replied:
"I'm sorry, you must have the wrong number - I don't know anyone called Jim."
"Of course you know Jim. If you could just make sure he gets the message - it's very important. Thanks a lot. Bye"

"Okay Dad, I can see that's irritating - what about annoying?"
Dad picks up the phone and redials the same number.

"Hallo?" says the voice.
"Hi again - another message for Jim. Can you tell him that the time's been changed as well."
"Look - I told you just now, I don't know anyone called Jim. Why are you calling back?"
"Well, it's really important - tell Jim that the meeting's now at three."
"Listen - I don't know anyone called Jim, and I'm not a ruddy message service. Don't call again!!"
Phone goes dead.

"Right Dad, I'm getting the idea - that's annoying. But what about exasperating?"
"Aha", says Dad. "Listen and learn."
Dad picks up the phone and redials the same number.

"Hallo?"
"Hi there - this is Jim. Have you got any messages for me?"
