a good cheap source would be useful as well

Depends what you want it for?
The cheap blue tape from Toolstation caused me no end of grief - damaging the surface underneath.
Low tack can be so low that it doesn't stick?
Frog stuff is good.

I have a stock of "release tape" from when I used to cut vinyl transfers. It is just sticky enough to adhere, but doesn't leave any nasty residue behind. It comes in a variety of widths and isn't all that expensive. Just do a search for signmaking vinyl. All suppliers will sell the release or application tape
