Hi all

Ive purchased a second hand Makita Mitre Saw LS1013 but it came with no blade. Can anyone tell me what blade I need to purchase or are they all one size fits all? and can anyone recommend what blade would be suitable for cutting wood, I mean you can get different TPI but not sure which is probably best for wood.

thanks

Colin

That will have a 30mm bore and be 10" or 255mm. Pretty standard. If it's in good nick you have yourself a superb chop saw. For blades I'd look for Freud or even the stock Makita blades are pretty good. I think you should be able to get these at screwfix and toolstation.

Oh and for finer cuts look for blades with more teeth, although they will cost more and cut slower. Mine has 40 teeth and is a good general purpose saw.

A mitre saw is for cross cutting, so if recommend a blade with 60+ teeth for a cleaner cut. As memzey days Freud are great blades

Thanks, looking on screwfix they have 250mm or 260mm, does it matter if I get 250mm or do I have to find 255mm like you said?

I got the saw for £75 without the blade, it was covered in dried on sawdust from a job where it was just put away but ive given it a big brush down with a brush. The only issue was one of the feet has broken but if I bolt it down with the other three plus some support under then it will be fine.

thanks

A 250mm will be fine - just make sure it's the right bore diameter (probably 30mm)

thanks this is the one im looking at, does the center hole not have to be rectangle like the shaft on the saw? when I say rectangle its got rounded edges but not a perfect circle. I know it must sound stupid but surely the blade will just spin as I cant see the washer things either side holding the blade stiff.

The rounded rectangle on the arbour shaft should fit the arbour washer. The blade itself is just sandwiched in between with friction

Please note if you use a 250mm blade on a saw setup for 255 you may have to make some adjustment so the saw cuts all the way through the material.

It's not 255mm for no reason :D

actuallly just noticed that the 16mm bore ones are marked 16,20,25,30mm so I take it that it is one size fits all, but if thats the case then surely the disc wont spin correctly?

Not sure where the 16mm bore comes from - iirc all Makita mitre saws have a 30mm bore? Also, the LS1013 will take up to a 260mm blade. Depending on what you intend to do with it, you need to think about the number of teeth you want. 60 teeth on a 260mm blade would be a good general purpose blade. There's also tooth configuration to consider. Alternate top bevel (ATB) blades will give a nice clean cut, for example - here's a quick guide I found - http://www.ebay.co.uk/gds/A-Guide-to-Bu ... 261/g.html .

Then finally, as it is a sliding mitre saw, the rake of the teeth is important. As you push the blade through the workpiece anything more than 5 degree positive rake will tend to pick the wood up. Personally I always use a 5 degree negative rake blade in my slide mitre saw - it's slower but far safer.

Hope I haven't muddied the waters too much but I couldn't stand by and watch you make an expensive mistake. If you are in any doubt it might pay you to visit an independent specialist tool shop (they don't just sell boxes - they know what they're talking about!) - and I don't mean the likes of Foolstation etc :) Good luck!

WOW just wow LOL

Thanks all. I think I will just get a 250mm 60t blade to start with, I can always buy another later, I have another cheaper mitre saw and sliding mitre saw so im sure the blades will be well used.

thanks all

Now you have started, when you get or replace your table saw, get one that takes the same size blades you can then share them on both machines.
