I'm going to be setting up a small workshop. I'm planning on building my own benches and cabinets etc. and wondered if anyone can recommend any books or resources to give me inspiration and a head start on the design.

Edit: Just thought I should add, I've seen loads of stuff on the internet obviously, it was recommendations of what people actually found useful and used themselves that I was after!

You've probably already seen, but I find videos of people like Jay Bates, John Heisz and Frank Howarth fantastic for making cabinets and shop items

No! Haven't seen these, and I've just had a very brief look at the channels and they look awesome! So glad I posted now, was a little bit concerned I'd be berated for simply not doing my own research (which I seriously have, just got very bored looking).

Thanks for this :)

Speaking of which, it was the Matthias Wandel videos that have inspired me to put a workshop together. I'm going to be in the position of needing a workshop to put the workshop together - following his example, you need a workshop to build the tools that you intend to build your workshop with...

Actually, Matthias has very few purchased tools - he pretty much makes everything he has with a tablesaw and a bandsaw (homemade).

He's a fantastic inventor and maker, but he's not fussed about aesthetics / quality of finish!

Bear in mind that when watching stuff from across the pond that the 31st amendment gives the yanks a right to ignore reasonable machine safety and remove their limbs with impunity

Only us eastern whimps bother with boring stuff like guards and Riving knives

I've always hankered after a version of Norm's workshop hutch myself. I intend to build one on the western wall of my new workshop when I get round tuit :)

Excellent suggestion, I like the look of that too, thanks for the heads up.

You're more than welcome mate. Norm gets a bad press as a woodworker (because he isn't really one) but some of his projects, like this hutch and his router table, are really good. Just don't compare him to Roy Underhill!
