I have a lurem c210b, the motor stopped working, i assume it has given up,i can't locate a new/used replacement,its about 20 years old.Would appreciate any suggestions. :?

Have you tried your nearest Lucas depot - they are great resurrectionists of old motors, or at any rate used to be.

Hi Chipper and welcome

I used to have a Lurem combi in the dim and distant past, but I don't recall the motor(s) being anything out of the ordinary. Has the motor actually stopped? I'd check the contactor set (the direct on line starter) first to see if it's actually latching and passing current, next I'd have the motor capacitor checked as this is more likely to have failed than the motor. If those two areas are OK and it is the motor which has failed it will probably be a foot mounted motor (can't recall my Lurem having a flange mounted motor) and the frame size is probably a 90. Take a look at the motor rating plate and the frame size and power should be there. Machine Mart might be a good starting point for motors if you want to replace it

Good luck!

Hi Chipper

Welcome to the forum. I think Scrit has covered most of the points, however I'll add a couple of thoughts. I apologise if I'm "teaching granny to suck eggs," and I make these suggestions in the hope that they are a help.

I don't know the machine myself, but if it is single phase (it will definitely be single phase if it has a standard household-type plug; otherwise it may or may not be), see if you can hear a faint, low humming* when it should be running. If so, the motor starting capacitor is almost certainly at fault. There is some chance that the starter windings or centrifugal switch in the motor could fail and cause this same buzzing, but that's less likely.

If there's no humming and it has a fused plug, check the fuse in the plug. If it's wired to a fixed circuit, you might be able to use one of those light-up "pen" type detectors to test whether the circuit is live or not - if it's not, you should be able to reset the breaker.

If the problem does turn out to be the motor capacitor, you should be able to get it changed by a local motor repair firm for under £20 I would expect. If there is some other problem with the motor they should also be able to help.

Cheers

Neil

* don't leave it "on" for a long time if it does buzz since without rotation and hence without cooling there is a danger of the motor overheating.

chipper, welcome to the forum, If you give a general indication of your location in your profile there may be someone near who can help or point you to a local motor rewind company if all else fails.

In any event we need to know more details about how and when it failed and what checks, if any, you have carried out to isolate the problem.

Re- Lurem c210b question,
thanks to Shultzy,Woodstoat,Scrit,Tigerturnings,CHJ and Neil for the welcome to the forum, and for the various suggestions, all taken on board and under investigation,a remedy is afoot i'm sure. :D

I'm still using a Lurem C200, which is an even earlier model than the 210B! It originally had a single position for the motor, but I've adapted it to take separate motors for the saw and planer, with changeover switch to go between them. If you need to replace electricals (either the motor or the switchgear) then it might be worth considering adding a second motor to save time and hassle on belt changing. Ebay, or local motor rewind people can be good sources of suitable secondhand motors or Machine Mart for new ones. (mine came off our local farmer's old bale elevator)

Lurem are linked with Electrobeckum and metabo surely you would be able to get an equivalent motor maybe from say a maxi26. If not and its just a motor you should be able to match it with a Brook Crompton motor

I noticed that you have been discussing a Lurem C210.

I have a 1982 Lurem C210B which I am going to sell. I could put it on ebay as I have a van to deliver at cost, however, I don't really want to be hassled by a load of scammers.

I bought the machine 2 years ago for £1600. My wife was thinking of having a go at woodworking/joinery and the machine was being sold locally so I could collect. Unfortunately, the missus was not impressed by having to change belts, and has steadfastly refused to use the machine!

The machine was given, as a retirement present, to the former head of Magnet joinery in 1982. It was owned by this gentleman until his death in the late 90s, then it stood unused in his workshop until his widow died in late 2004. It was sold by the widow's son who had to clear their personal effects.

The motor runs the table saw; which is the only thing I have used. There are several attachments which allow the full range of functions. There are also 2 packets of new blades (about 50 in total) for the spindle moulder. There is a manual.

Anyone any idea of the value? (I was told about £1200 to £1500 by a joiner who worked on the house, but he did say that this was a rough estimate.) We will probably replace the machine with separate tools when we have finished building our house this summer and can turn the garage into a proper workshop.

Please look at www.timval.com if you would like to see what we have been up to on the house build.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Newbie error, sorry. Thanks for correcting it.

No we block any URLs being posted by forum noobies as we get (or got) a spate of bots registering and posting links to porn. The filter was introduced to stop anybody being able to click the links they post.

The filter only lasts for your first few posts - then it wears off when its clear you aren't a spam-bot!
