Who uses it.
I am fortunate to have a woods that mill, Larch, Oak, Elm, Ash, Beech, Birch and Sycamore. When a client comes to have something made I try to go the home grown route if I can. Wether it be a larch fence or an oak stair.

I totally agree and am also fortunate, myself, to have Interesting Timber not too far from where I am, who specialise in home-grown hardwoods wherever possible.

The only obvious exception for me, though, is with Black Walnut - the American stuff is roughly half the price of English Walnut!

So, unless I only required a very small amount, this would be the one main exception.

Olly,

Following your tip the other day I headed down to interesting timber. Well worth a visit, so much choice and also very friendly service . Looks like they are going to be my supplier of choice, I was like a kid in a sweet-shop. Now I have decided to make a first project which is going to be an oak side table (small so if I balls it up it doesn't cost too much!). Just going to try using sketchup and see how it goes.

Glad to hear it, Paul. :D

I hope you have better luck than I have using SketchUp. I downloaded it months ago but haven't put a lot of effort in to learning how to use it properly. I guess that actually has little to do with luck then... :)

Here's another link I've come across before that may help you? This is more to do with my neck of the woods, I guess, but there could be a similar set up in your area?
