I'm close to joining the "old wood working machine fan club"

picked up an item from another forumite earlier (thanks David the bandsaw wheel kit is going to be a godsend, great workshop you have too), few days earlier i happened to notice this little machine on ebay & that it would be on the way so did a double pick up this aft.

Little 6" planer which i identified with googles help as a Dodd machine, no motor & the original base is gone, but i though what the hell, make & offer & see what happens, if anything will give me something to do late on an evening when machining would be too noisy.

so, £40 later and its mine, apart from being very gunk'd up & covered in surface rust its a neat little machine, well made & sturdy, the only thing on it that's a bit crappy is the quality of the guard compared with the rest of the machine.

took it home tonight and started stripping it, so far so good, its coming apart & cleaning up very easily, only one ding in the out feed surface which im not worried about. the blades are in surprisingly good condition, will probably order some new ones if i can find some matching spec ones, hopefully cutting solutions have them.

will get it cleaned, and probably repaint it (probably will be green instead of blue as i already have that on the shelf) & rebuild with a base & new/old motor...

whilst im a big fan of old machines, i dont really have room for them & hate moving them but this little thing is about right for my home shop.

will post more pics when its all done.

Welcome to the club. That's a lovely little thing. Looks like you should be able to do rebates with it.

yup, its capable of doing rebates, im just waiting to hear back from cutting solutions on if they can supply a set of matching new blades.

im very chuffed with it, and its not looking like iuts going to be a hard to get it back up and running.

just had a quick look at your website, that's some serious restoration work you do, i doubt i will put as much time into anything id do but well bloody done. love wadkin machines, my sp12 has served me well for 12 years and had been running for the company i took the premises from for way more years than i have had it, also had a big wadkin planer at one point, sadly the sp is eaving me next month as its too big & im loosing phase 3 power.

Do you know the dimensions of the knives you need? I'm sure I have some kicking around you can have.

yes, they are a fraction over 150mm long, 18mm wide (though im guessing they were 20mm to start with one is very ground and the cutting edge bowed) & 3mm thick.

if you have any, do let me know i will gladly pay you for them.

that looks similar to the Axminster CT150 planer. Perhaps their blades would fit?

Specs there.

ohhh, very close, a bit narrower but they look close enough no rebate edge though. i have saved that link. thanks. :)

im not having trouble sourcing blades, if i need them cutting solutions can sort me some that are pretty much exact in just over a weeks lead time, which is brilliant.

Sorry for the late response, heres the blades I've got. Any use?

no problem i appreciate you looking, as it happens i just found 4 sets of blades just like yours in the old tool box that was in my workshop when i moved in, had no idea we had them, im going to see if i can get them to fit. might give you a shout for more if i balls it up.

By the way, you mentioned you use a wire wool wheel in your clean up jobs, can you point me in the right direction of the ones you use? most of the ones i find are tiny..

thanks
G
