I bought a bandsaw recently and want some hardback novel sized piececs to practice re-sawing, cutting veneers of something a bit nicer than B&Q softwood, maybe walnut, cherry, purpleheart, question is where to buy and now much should I expect to pay?

I see now where I've been going wrong.

I churn out bigger and better off-cuts than these every day, but they mostly go in the woodburner. At these prices I could probably make more money selling the scrap than I do making the furniture!

Don't fancy relocating to lovely Lincs, do you? I used to live in the SE, I can assure you it's much nicer up here.

if you don't mind travelling to sheffield there is arnold lavers, i have never visited this branch but have used the bradford one although not for quite a few years now, as i use allen and orr here in doncaster which is another possibility and they have a branch in chesterfield aswel, http://www.allen-orr.com/,

When I went to the Newark wood show earlier this year I'm pretty sure there was a wood seller there that is close to you.
Actually when i saw your post header I thought it was going to be a recommendation.

Following on from what Custard says; I sometime buy a pick up truck (about 6 cubic meters) full of firewood (waste from a furniture factory) - costs me 120 delivered. Its mainly beech but sometimes other hardwoods. Much is too good to burn .

There was a place on the A57 at Saxilby, a reclaim centre, that I have driven by many times so I popped over there yesterday thinking they might have something of interest and found it had been reclaimed. There's another place on the A46 towards Horncastle but with them, for me, it's a case if you can't say anything good, don't say anything at all. Before taking up woodwork, I used to regularly drive past a sign that said 'Saturday Sawmill' but haven't seen that for ages now so don't know if they ceased to be - a lot of places have ceased to be in last few years. I believe there's a place in Horncastle itself but I've never been able to find it and I don't often head out that way anymore.

There is a place called Emmerson's near horncastle which seems to have some stuff. I bought some pens blanks a while ago, but have just sent a message to enquire about some turning blanks. There is a chap on the end of the Ashley Iles stand at the Harrogate and Newark shows who is based out that way too.

A bit further afield, Stuart somerscales is worth a look.

Mail order- home of wood is well priced and may have something for you. Native species only, and no walnut though.

I bought a bundle from this lady. Delivery was prompt, would have been prompter had Royal Mail delivered both bundles together rather three days apart. Two nice pieces (not as nice as the one you've listed elsewhere), two smaller pieces and a bonus piece thrown in for free
