Guy's.

Ive seen some You-Tube clips showing simple lathes using a hand drill as the turner. With that in mind, does anyone know if you can buy the wood parts to make one like a flat pack kit?

I'm not in the position to make one myself yet, as I need a few cutting tools to get started, or have the confidence?

Thanks.

Richard.

I wouldn't bother. You could buy a cheap starter lathe that would be infinitely better for less money than the drill and any parts. You would still need to buy tools and sharpening gear, so the lathe itself is only 50% of the outlay.

If you would enjoy the process of making the homemade lathe, and had the tools to do so, then you could potentially make one that is useable. If you want the cheapest way to get into woodturning, then looking out for a used wood lathe (perhaps in need of some work/restoration) is probably the better option. A tired metal lathe can be made into a wood lathe aswell.
