I have an old Peter Child Masterchuck which I am thinking of replacing. I don't really trust it to turn large bowls (I have a 15" one to do). So looking at best value for money. Has anyone used the Xact Precision 4" chuck? The kit from Rutlands looks good value but only if the chuck is decent quality. I haven't found a review anywhere. Opinions anyone?

I posted a summary of chucks back in Jan 2014. Afraid it doesn't include the Xact but probably its equivalent the Dakota XT700

I have an equivalent (Dakota/Fox/Record ?), bought from this forum, but don't know its brand although it was supplied in a Record brand case. It's my go to chuck, probably because the jaw travel is greater than my Axminster chucks & I'm lazy & don't bother with the correct size of mounting tenon (perhaps that's why my turning is so bad :). I do size them if the turning warrants it but for bowls it doesn't really matter).

Edit: I remember now ... I'm not a fan of the Axminster 'C' jaws which are the most used size. They have a protrusion on the inside of the jaw which has to be taken into account when making the tenon (I said I was lazy).

I personally think of even considering them if I want to be very precise on concentricity with little boxes etc.
I never bother and just use them on a dovetail spigot and let the keys just bite into the wood if they have a mind too. Never had a failure to grip or support that I could attribute to this 'lazy' work method.
