Laser engraver/cutter

Looking at POSSIBLE purchase of laser engraver/cutter for pens and general craft type products and would greatly appreciate any words of advise as completely new to this type of work.
Budget flexible but have to consider rate of return against outlay.
Would like to thank in advance any help at this stage.

Any new laser equipment is going to be very expensive.

Good condition used equipment can often be picked up at bankrupt/liquidation auctions for a fraction of its new price.
