I am so annoyed I just cant find any hardwood suppliers. I want to build projects from magazines and books but cant buy the wood. One web site where you can get wood on price per cutting list requests a £750 minimum order, I cannot afford that I am only a hobby woodworker. does anyone know any suppliers that supply hardwoods in smaller sizes for hobby woodworkers?
even when I google Suffolk suppliers the web site does not give u prices,

Are you trying to mail order your timber? You really need to go down to your local timber yard - I have one within a mile, so am lucky. That way you can select your timber, rather than relying on what they send you.

I'm sure some members near you will be able to recommend timber yards to go and visit.

Cheers

Karl

Have you tried putting your postcode in the "find your local" tab at the top of the page?

Cheers.

One company I've used is Robbins, in Bristol.

Ok, they are local to me, but they do deliver nationwide, with no minimum order and stock a wide choice of hardwoods. (Though I think they charge delivery if order is under £150.)

They are not specially cheap, but I've used them when I wanted hardwoods machined to size (I don't have a planer/thicknesser). What I got was all straight and flat, with no wastage at all.

There is north Heigham sawmills in Norwich which can't be too far from you?

I can't find their web site though so hope they are still operating as they let you rummage all you like in the wood stores and had some great stuff when i made the journey a couple of years ago.

Steve.

I can't help you in Suffolk (I'm Kent) but 2 things: go to the yard (and it is almost always worth the trip, even for small amounts), pick out the bits you want as mail order will get you the average stuff, and ask nicely what interesting woods they may have around. I know at least 3 yards within say 10 miles of me that always have small amounts of amazing stock, and deals get done if you are on-the-spot. There must be good yards in Suffolk, and they will have some nice woods in smaller amounts.
Another good source for smaller sections is reclaimed flooring. I got some amazing maple that way a while ago - maybe 80 years old, rock hard, straight, quarter-sawn originally. The shorter bits they don't need are there for an offer (maybe peanuts). Just get the nails out before you show it to your planer though!

Since they were bought out by Cushions a few years ago they are now awful - Hardly any stock and totally stupid prices!

Spannermonkey - PM Sent - Give me a call I'm sure I can point you in the right direction

I have a large yard and it is stacked to the gunnels with hardwoods in all shapes and sizes.

I have an ad on the wood suppliers page (put in postcode SO416DG)

Visiting woodworkers have described it as wood porn.

I can send 30kg a time for £10-00 inc vat.

What sort of wood are you after?

But much better is bite the bullet get in the car and drive down for a look around... My prices are good and if you have an open mind on what you're after you will go away satisfied. 2 members on this forum have already visited and they left with smiles on their faces :D

I second what Roger said about North Heigham sawmills. I dropped in a couple of weeks ago when i was visiting my bro in Norwich and it was really awful, the prices they were asking for small bits of planed up wood were just crazy.

I got what I needed from Whitmores.

I'm interested in this because I'm thinking of re-locating to Norfolk. I live half an hour away from Whitmores so I'm spoilt at the moment but I haven't found anything like as good a timberyard on the east coast. Where do cabinet makers source their wood from if they are in Norfolk/Suffolk?

Phil.

Make up a list of timber you want for a few upcoming projects and then take a drive out to the mills to sort through their wood. make a day of it, have an ice cream or dinner out and you can return with just the timber you want.

Here's one..

ben sutton a few miles from you, has all you need.

There are a few more about if you but google......

PS. North heigham is a waste of time now, it hasn't been great for a long time to be fair even before cushions bought it off the Bretts, and has always sold timber at silly prices. Was handy if you needed a piece of timber quickly, and needed your pocket rinsing

There is a member here called Beowolf (Johan to his friends) He lives near you and may be able to tell where he gets his timber from.

Just a thought?

Are you in the Lymington area? I've just bought a house in Lymington and will be moving in August 2012, first priority will be tracking down a local hardwood supplier!
