Ok, I think I know the lesson to learn here, but wanted to check!
So, timber frame from 2x2 (verticals) and 3x1 (horizontals) over a 2'x1' approx build to make a cube. I cut half laps at the end of each of the verticals, which took the long horizontals, and at 90degrees to that at the midpoint of the verticals to take the short horizontals.
When I came to assemble it to the base, as there is variation in the 3 of the 3x1, in some instances only the vertical touches the base. That can be addressed of course, but now my nice identical verticals are no longer identical!
Lesson one - I should never cut half laps at the very end I'm assuming, for this reason?
Then joining it to the base. If I was making something with a "floor", then I'd put a board over the top edge of the lowest horizontals, with 4 notches in the corner, nice and easy. In this instance though, I wanted the frame to sit on top of the base. So I used angle brackets to join the timber to the 18mm MDF base. Nightmare to get them to pull up properly!
Lesson two - don't use angle brackets - but what could I have used?
Just bodging together a router table cabinet, but since I want to have a bash at some furniture this year I want to start learning how to do things properly/neatly!
Cheers.
