Hello
I'm new to wood working and was given a piece of timber found on a farm. I have recently turned it into a chopping board but a friend tells me it might be Yew but they were unsure.

Obviously since then I have found out that Yew is poisonous and do not want to harm myself or young children.
Could anyone advice on whether this is Yew for definite?

Many Thanks

Tom

No expert (laughs like a maniac) but that looks like elm to me too.

Previous post on using Yew as a chopping board.
Personally I wouldn't. I'd save that what looks like elm for a chair/stool/ seat one day when you feel up for the challenge. Too nice for a chopping board to my mind at least.

I'd personally say without any doubt it's not Elm or any other hardwood for that matter. I would say it's not Yew as Yew tends to have a much more distinct, finer, wilder grain.

My best guess would be that's a piece of Douglas Fir.

Chas is the resident yew expert having secured about 80% of the uk stock but it would guess is it was yew. Does smell pine like? Any pink in the grain - photo not quite come out to see colours but I think I can see colours that would suggest yew.
