Is this possible?

On the For sale forum there is a CL1 headstock / motor for sale, I'm wondering wether this could replace the headstock and motor on my old coronet No1. The motor on mine is starting to sound tired/noisy and is not very powerful and of course only 3 speeds. I'm guessing the only real limiting factor is the tailstock height, or is there something else I have forgotten to factor in?

Its quite expensive (for me) so don't want to get it wrong!.

Surely the CL1 is just the Record designation of the Coronet No 1 anyway?
Pretty sure they are one and the same lathe.

Dick is right as far as I am aware. CL1 stands for Coronet Lathe 1. They are the same lathe. Maybe just look at getting the motor you have looked at?

I did wonder the same, however the new CL1 offers a few things that mine doesn't like a rotating headstock and 4 speeds. Which made me wonder if it will be a straight swop or not. Its more than I wanted to spend but it does look like it may be a good upgrade.

Hi Matt
Suggest measure the height on your lathe from bed bars to drive centre and check with the seller if the rotating headstock has added additional height so your tailstock wouldn't line up.

has decided not to sell now.

Guess I'll have to live with my trusty No1 for a bit longer!

My CL1. The height from the top of the bars to the centre of the headstock drive is 6". It is only a 3 speed, or was, and it has the turning headstock. That is really usefull. The motor that was on it is 250w, so not very powerful, but it was enough for me for 14 years. I have now replaced it with a 3ø variable speed 1/2 horse motor. Even though it is an older version than the one for sale I would think that the height would be the same.

Well I bought it! I had a very enjoyable couple of hours at Dodges this morning having a nose around his workshop asking daft questions.

Got it home and it all fits like a charm.



As you can see it lines up perfectly, it is a lot quieter at the slowest speed but very loud at the fastest, it hasn't done a lot of work so i am wondering if it needs bedding in a bit, can you grease the bearings?

Inspired by dodge's lovely thin edge on this turning I tried the same
with a piece of elm and it came out quite well (for me). The recess in the centre is there as this piece is going to be part of a tiered cake stand.




Thanks to dodge for his hospitality this morning, I feel fired up!

It was very nice thanks, although I forgot your advice about it blunting the tools quickly - oops. A quick re-sharpen made a massive difference. I do
wish I could remember to sharpen at regular intervals.
